Social projects

Since lateinamerika.reisen was founded, we have been committed to helping the people who live in our destinations. This includes social initiatives, which we support with regular donations and visit with our travel groups. Here we present some of the projects to which we are committed in the long term. Some of them have been completed and others are still dependent on our support.
Papa Noel Trekero 2024
Christmas in Latin America is green 🎄 There are many traditions. One of them is the **Chocolatadas** in Peru. Hot chocolate, a piece of panettone and presents make children's hearts beat faster. ☕🥧🎁

We have supported the **Papa Noel Trekero** social project in Peru, a moving initiative that captures the true spirit of Christmas. It combines the magic of Christmas with the stunning landscapes of the Andes. The name alone tells a story: **Papa Noel**, Santa Claus, becomes **Trekero**, a wanderer who treks through the mountains to bring hope and joy to the most remote villages. This year we went to the village of Luquina Chico on Lake Titicaca.

With a sack full of presents and a heart full of warmth, Papa Noel Trekero visits remote communities that often live far from the hustle and bustle of the cities. For many children who grow up in the valleys and heights of the Peruvian Andes, this visit is something very special - a moment that makes their eyes light up with joy. It's not just about the gifts, but about the message that they are seen and valued, even if they live in seemingly forgotten corners of the world.
Amazon rainforest conservation project: "Chocolatada" in Pampa Caño
The jungle conservation project on the Rio Marañón in the Amazon lowlands of Peru was initiated by **Lateinamerika.reisen** to promote the preservation of this unique ecosystem. Our focus is not only on protecting nature, but also on supporting the local communities. Find out more soon!

As part of our social responsibility, we organized a Christmas party, a so-called **Chocolatada**, for the children of the surrounding villages. The **Chocolatada** is a popular custom in Peru and is organized by non-profit organizations, private individuals and companies during the Christmas season. The children are served hot chocolate and given a piece of delicious panettone. There is usually also a small gift. Children in poor and remote communities rarely have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas. Therefore, this event provides an opportunity for community bonding and creates positive memories for the children.

Your support plays a crucial role in making this commitment a reality. By participating in our jungle conservation project, you not only contribute to nature conservation, but also promote the health and quality of life of the local population.
"Pan y Arte": Project trip to Nicaragua
Pan y Arte e. V. (Bread and Art) stands for equal opportunities and educational justice in Nicaragua, one of the poorest countries in Central America. For the association, development cooperation means more than just economic support. Pan y Arte is convinced that art and culture are equally important. Both are basic human needs and therefore indispensable.

The focus of the cultural education work is on children and young people, who are encouraged and empowered through music-making and painting, reading and writing, dancing and drama. The association promotes creativity and contributes to the livelihoods of those who have less than we do with its various educational programs. Through music, literature and art, Pan y Arte has been writing success stories in Nicaragua for more than 20 years.
**CULTURE must not be a luxury! True to this motto, development cooperation means more to the association than just economic support. The focus of its work is on people and all their needs.

lateinamerika.reisen has been organizing an annual project trip to Nicaragua together with Pan y Arte e. V. for many years. In addition to experiencing tourist attractions, project visits are planned that are particularly suitable for allowing visitors to actively participate in the everyday life of the people in the host country for the duration of their stay and to establish a close connection with their culture. Art and creativity open up dialogues between cultures.

Among the projects visited are:

**Música en los Barrios**: Music is a language that all people understand. In this cultural project, many hundreds of children make music, sing and dance in the poor districts of the capital Managua. It teaches self-confidence, responsibility and mutual respect. In this project, the participants can make music with the children and at the same time experience the joy of life that can be found even under the most difficult economic conditions.
**Bücherbus Bertolt Brecht** and **Deutsch-Nicaraguanische Bibliothek**: There is a great thirst for knowledge, but libraries in rural areas are rare. The book bus and the library satisfy the thirst for reading of around 10,000 people. The bus supplies remote villages and four prisons with books. The tour participants are always amazed at how extensive the library and the Nicaraguans' love of reading is.
Cultural and meeting center **Casa de los Tres Mundos**: This cultural project promotes creativity, education and dialog between social classes throughout the country through various courses. Here, tour participants can paint, dance or play theater together with Nicaraguans. The joy of playing together effortlessly overcomes language barriers.
**Children of the Volcano**: The newly emerging village in Malacatoya/Los Angeles offers around 1,000 victims of Hurricane Mitch (1998) a safe place to live, work and an identity. The village has had a school and a health center since 2002. Secure jobs are provided by a paper factory and an apiary. Tour participants can make paper under supervision and take it home with them as a souvenir.
The **Pan y Arte** project tour is a particularly good example of a successful synthesis of sustainable tourism and travel experience and offers a genuine alternative to the usual forms of travel. Tourists who are looking to meet the people in the host country are particularly attracted by our Nicaragua trip and return to Germany enthusiastic - and often as future supporters of the project work.

Misminay in Peru
lateinamerika.reisen has been supporting the village community of Misminay for many years now. And it looks like this: On our Peru trips, our customers can visit the project - called Mullak'as Misminay -, live in the village and take part in activities led by the residents: Homesteading, farming, cooking and loom courses, Quechua language courses, seminars on the use of plants in medicine or for sweets. This project was the way for the Andean inhabitants to free themselves from bitter poverty and establish a secure standard of living. All jobs within the project are held by local people. Our partner agency acts as an employer.

The people, 300 of them, who live in the community at an altitude of 3,700 meters, isolated from industrial achievements, have preserved their old traditions. As a tour operator, we support this village community with a community-based partner project that enables the inhabitants of Misminay to maintain their structures with the help of tourism and at the same time open up sustainable, future-proof prospects.

lateinamerika.reisen received the TravelOne Sustainability Award in 2014 for this village development project. You can visit this project on our eBike tour through Peru.
